Do you like the most famous crossing of two grape varietals from Bordeaux, France?
Today the Cabernet Sauvignon is the most prominently grown wine grape around the world and first appeared in the 17th century in Southwestern region of Bordeaux, France. The Cabernet Franc and the Sauvignon Blanc by way of DNA evidence have been shown to be the ancestors of the Cabernet Sauvignon.
The very first glass of wine I ever had was a Cabernet Sauvignon, the reason I remember liking it and continued to automatically order it over the years was a combination of characteristics; the dry feeling on my tongue, the strong flavor, and the bold bouquet.
I grew up in the dry, award winning, mouth watering Salsa region of West Texas, that small town with so much history known as El Paso, short for El Paso de Norte translated The Passageway to the North. I like strong tasting beverages that have a snap on my tongue that are so bold you feel as though they have wrapped your senses with their flavor.
Why should you care about the Cabernet Sauvignon wines?
History, history is what gives us a context of strength and perseverance. For the longest time the origin of the Cabernet Sauvignon was a debatable rumor and it wasn’t until 1996 that geneticist Dr. Carole Meredith was able to genetically determine that the origin of the Cabernet Sauvignon was France. As powerful a presence as this vine has in the history of the industry it is equally as powerful and popular still today. It is no “has-been”, to many winemakers in the industry use the Cabernet Sauvignon to blend with other wines to create the taste and flavor they desire.
Cabernet Sauvignon, how much is actually around?
In the year 2014 there were 510,179 tons of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes harvested and crushed from 87,972 acres just in California, per the Wine Institute.
The Cabernet Sauvignon according to the Wine Institute is the second leading varietal sold to the United States per Gomberg, Fredrikson & Associates.
